The challenge

Nordvind Wind Services won three new O&M contracts in quick succession in 2022–2023, growing their headcount from 80 to 280 technicians in under two years. Each technician required a current GWO Basic Safety certificate plus up to six further GWO module endorsements depending on their role. The company was using a combination of SharePoint lists, calendar reminders and paper dossiers. As headcount tripled, the system collapsed — HR spent four full days per month just auditing who was still GWO-current. Shift patterns on the North Sea wind farms ran 14-on/14-off and 7-on/7-off in overlapping crews, making manual scheduling error-prone. Two technicians were pulled from a vessel at the last moment due to lapsed certs, causing a costly maintenance delay.

The solution

Nordvind implemented all four Markular modules over a single week. People became the system of record for all 280 technicians. Skills tracked all GWO certificates with automated 60-day and 30-day expiry alerts sent directly to the technician, their line manager, and HR. Planner managed the 14/7-on/off crew rosters with hard blocks preventing scheduling of non-compliant personnel. Timekeeper replaced three separate spreadsheet-based timesheet systems and connected directly to their payroll provider via the export API. As each new batch of technicians joined, onboarding coordinators used a pre-built GWO template in Skills to assign the correct certificate requirements in under two minutes per person — allowing the company to absorb rapid growth without adding administrative headcount.
